The first SusCritMat Winter school on Critical Raw Materials took place in Les Diablerets, Switzerland, from January 15 to 19, 2018.
The SusCritMat Winter School 2018 brought together educational and technical expertise of leading
European educational institutions and business in an interdisciplinary approach. In a novel concept, it merged knowledge of experts from various academic fields into sustainability-related modules. Participants were able to immediately apply their newly acquired knowledge in hands-on exercises to the different presenations and a week-long project work.
In those project groups, participants took a company’s perspective to analyse and discuss the various technological, environmental, economic, social and legal aspects surrounding a certain product component, such as a mobile phone screen or the battery of an electric bike. Finally, they had to present a strategy for their company on the raw materials of their component.
This approach proved a success. The working groups being composed of people from different academic background made sure that their analysis was in-depth and multidimensional.
