“The Rare Metal Research Fellowship” 2007 - 2012

In 2007 the Foundation established “The Rare Metal Research Fellowship", which was intended for young researchers at the start of their career and advanced young researchers who want to continue their work in the field of rare metals. Various projects have been launched in the time of 2007 to 2012 like

  • ETH Zürich, Department of Materials Science,Zürich - Dr. Noble C. Woo - "Superplasticity in Thin Films", supervisor Prof. Ralph Spolenak.
  • Paul Scherrer Institute –PSI, Neutron Diffraction Group, Würelingen and Université de Rennes, France -  Loïc LeDreau and his PhD Thesis "Oxygen transport in Ln2MO4+δ perovskites derivatives" supervisor Dr. Jürg Schefer, PSI and Prof. Werner Paulus, Université de Renne
  • ETH Zürich, Department of Materials,Zürich - Dr. Manuela Russo and her project  “Hybrid materials of titanium oxide hydrates and polymers with a view to optical applications” - supervisor Prof. Walter Caseri
  • EMPA, Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research, Laboratory for Joining & Interface Technology, Dübendorf - Dr. Liliana Isabel Duarte and her project “(Ni, Ti)-Al-Ge alloys for brazing of advanced aluminides” - supervisor Dr. Christian Leinenbach

In 2007 two projects have been subsidized by ESM, which have started at the begin of 2008:

"Superplasticity in Thin Films" : this research project is carried out by Dr. Noble C. Woo, a scientist with MS and PhD in Chemistry and Chemical Biology from Cornell University, NY, and B.S. in Physics from University of California-San Diego, CA, USA. The project is conducted at the Laboratory for Nanometallurgy at the ETH Zurich and supervised by Prof. Dr. Ralph Spolenak.

"Oxygen Transport in La2CoO4 and Nd2NiO4 perovskites" : the research project  is carried out by Dr. Paul Schefer, Laboratory for Neutron Scattering ETH Zurich and Paul Scherrer Institute and Loic Le Dreau (MS at University of Rennes), at the Paul Scherrer Institute in close collaboration with Professor Werner Paulus from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Rennes France.

In spring 2009 a new call was initiated and two new projects will be funded, to start in November 2009 and January 2010:

"(Ni, Ti)-Al-Ge alloys for brazing of advanced aluminides" : Dr.Liliana Isabel Duarte  studied at the Porto University (Portugal) and got her M.Sc., Materials Engineering with a thesis on solid state diffusion bonding of g-TiAl intermetallics. She received her PhD in November 2009 at ETH Zürich and EMPA Dübendorf. She will start soon with her project in the research group of Dr. Christian Leinenbach at the Laboratory of Joining and Interface Technology at EMPA Dübendorf.

"Hybrid materials of titanium oxide hydrates and polymers with a view to optical applications" : Dr. Manuela Russo graduated at the University of London, Centre for Materials Research, Queen Mary and received her PhD in summer 2009, while she obtained her Masters degree in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Naples “Federico II”, Naples, Italy. The research project at the ETH Zürich, Polymertechnology in the group of Prof. Dr. Walter Caseri will start in January 2010.
